This watercolour artwork illustrates the Celtic folktale of the Oak King and the Holly King, or the Holly Queen in this case! Each year they battle at Midsummer and Midwinter. The story goes that on Summer Solstice the Oak King is at his peak strength and wins against the Holly King/Queen. The Oak King reigns until Winter Solstice when the Holly King/Queen prevails in battle and the wheel of the year is turned once more, marking the return to light.
The artwork is designed to be rotated every 6 months, with the presiding winner upright, to honour the Solstices and create a seasonal ritual half way through your year. With this art print you too can turn the wheel of the year and bring a creative touch of magic to your altar or sacred space at home.
